How to do it

  1. 1

Sit or stand tall with your chin level

Shoulders relaxed and the back of the neck long. The head is going to stay exactly where it starts.

  2. 2

Place one hand flat against the side of your head

Just above the ear, with a light contact.

  3. 3

Press your head into your hand without moving

The hand meets the pressure so nothing actually travels. Very light pressure is plenty to begin with.

  4. 4

Hold 10 to 15 seconds, then release slowly

Let the effort fade gradually rather than dropping it all at once.

  5. 5

Repeat at the forehead and the back of the head

Same rules each time: light contact, nothing moves, and a slow release at the end.

What to watch for

Pressure creeping up until the head actually shifts. It should stay light enough that nothing moves at all, and if anything starts travelling into an arm or a hand, stop.

Ways to adjust it

  • Very light pressure

Before you try it

Move within a range that stays comfortable. Stop if this brings on sharp pain, dizziness, or symptoms that travel down an arm or a leg, and speak to a clinician before repeating it.
