6 Seated Forward Fold variations, from gentlest to strongest

Also called paschimottanasana, seated forward bend, sitting forward fold.

Folding forward over straight legs, which reaches the whole back of the body. The versions are mostly about what tips the pelvis forward, because that is what decides whether the fold happens at the hip or the waist.

The list runs from the most supported version to the most demanding. Paschimottanasana: Blanket Under Pelvis is the one to begin with. Harder is not better: the version you can do without gripping is the one doing the work.

Every version in the library

  1. 1 · Hip Mobility · 60 to 180 seconds

    Paschimottanasana: Blanket Under Pelvis

The most accessible seated forward fold: a blanket under your pelvis creates a forward tilt that protects your lower back and makes this stretch more comfortable for everyone.

Make it work for you: Strap. Bent knee. Soft knee

  2. 2 · Hip Mobility · 60 to 180 seconds

    Paschimottanasana: Bent Knee

Bent knees reduce hamstring tension, making this seated forward fold more accessible while still providing meaningful posterior chain release and spinal mobility.

Make it work for you: Strap. Blanket

  3. 3 · Hip Mobility · 60 to 180 seconds

    Paschimottanasana: With Strap

Make it work for you: Bent knee addition. Bent knee. Soft knee

  4. 4 · Hip Mobility · 60 to 180 seconds

    Paschimottanasana: Hands on Blocks

Blocks under your hands reduce how far you need to reach, keeping your spine longer and making this seated forward fold more accessible for tighter bodies.

Make it work for you: Strap. Bent knee

  5. 5 · Hip Mobility · 120 to 300 seconds

    Paschimottanasana: Bolster on Legs

A bolster on your legs supports your trunk for long, meditative holds, creating a deeply restorative experience that releases posterior chain tension over time.

Make it work for you: Bent knee

  6. 6 · Hip Mobility · 60 to 180 seconds

    Paschimottanasana: Classic

A deep seated forward fold that provides maximum posterior chain release, improving hamstring flexibility and relieving tension through your entire back body.

Make it work for you: Bent knee. Strap. Blanket under pelvis
